Jana Mackey Distinguished Lecture Series returns with 'Real Men, Real Talk'

LAWRENCE — The University of Kansas welcomes educator and activist Tony Porter as keynote speaker at the annual Jana Mackey Distinguished Lecture Series in memory of late women’s rights activist and KU law student Jana Lynne Mackey.
This year’s lecture, “Real Men, Real Talk,” will be given by Porter, who speaks about issues related to masculinity and men taking the lead to challenge negative stereotypes and behavior. The event will take place at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 24, at the Woodruff Auditorium in the Kansas Union. The program is free and open to the public.
Porter is an educator and activist working in the social justice arena for more than 20 years. He is nationally recognized for his effort to end men’s violence against women. He is the original visionary and co-founder behind A CALL TO MEN, the national association of men and women committed to ending violence against women. He is the author of “Well Meaning Men ... Breaking Out of the Man Box — Ending Violence Against Women” and the visionary for the book “NFL Dads Dedicated to Daughters.”
Porter's message of accountability is supported by many grass-roots and established organizations. He’s currently working with numerous domestic and sexual violence programs, the National Football League, the National Basketball Association and colleges and universities around the country. Porter is an international lecturer for the U.S. State Department and has worked with the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis. In addition, he has been a guest presenter for the United Nations’ Commission on the Status of Women.
The Jana Mackey Distinguished Lecture Series was established in spring 2009 in honor of former KU law student and activist Jana Mackey, who was killed by her boyfriend at the beginning of the 2008-09 academic year. As a passionate social and women’s activist, Jana fought for equality and social justice at every turn. In an effort to continue her important work, this lecture series was established to raise awareness about issues close to Jana's heart, namely breaking down barriers and fostering opportunities to secure women’s rights leaders and experts with the dual purpose of enhancing understanding and calling for involvement and service while providing a platform for discussion and dialogue.
