LAWRENCE – The University of Kansas Army, Air Force and Navy ROTC units will host several events to commemorate this year’s Veterans Day, which is Friday, Nov. 11.

All three branches of the ROTC will begin with a retreat ceremony on the front lawn of Strong Hall at 4:15 p.m. Nov. 11. This formal ceremony has all cadets standing at attention during the lowering of the flag, a moving beginning to the weekend.

The retreat ceremony will be followed by a guest speaker at 5 p.m. in Budig Hall. This year’s speaker is Brig. Gen. Victor J. Braden, currently assistant division commander, 35th Infantry Division at Fort Leavenworth. The general earned his master’s degree in public administration from KU in 1995.

Cadets and midshipmen will begin a 24-hour vigil at 7 p.m. Nov. 11 at the Vietnam War Memorial, the Korean War Memorial and the Campanile to honor those who have given their life in defense of our country. All memorials are located on Memorial Drive on the KU campus.

Capping the weekend events is a reception at the Dole Institute of Politics at 6 p.m. Nov. 13. The event is hosted by local veterans’ organizations and will feature refreshments and entertainment; all veterans are welcome to attend. Reception attendees are asked to RSVP by Nov. 7 by calling (785) 864-4900 or emailing doleinstitute@ku.edu.
