LAWRENCE — One of the top executives at the International Monetary Fund will give the 2012 Diplomat's Forum Lecture next week at the University of Kansas School of Law.

Sean Hagan serves as general counsel and director of the legal department at the Washington D.C.-based IMF, an organization of 188 countries working to increase financial stability, monetary cooperation and economic growth. He will deliver a lecture on "The Eurozone Crisis: Defining the Path to Recovery" at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 1, in the Stinson Morrison Hecker LLP Lecture Hall, 104 Green Hall. The lecture is free and open to the public, and a reception will follow the event.

"We were very pleased to be able to entice Sean Hagan to come to Green Hall for our Diplomat's Forum," said John Head, Robert W. Wagstaff Distinguished Professor. "He has a wealth of experience at the IMF, having helped guide that institution through challenging times for over 22 years. And his work as the top legal officer of one of the world's key financial organizations has certainly involved diplomacy of the sort that our Diplomat's Forum is designed to highlight."

In his current position, Hagan advises the Fund's management, executive board and membership on all legal aspects of its operations. He has also published extensively on the law of the Fund and a broader range of legal issues involving the prevention and resolution of financial crisis. Two of his most recent publications deal with enhancing the Fund's regulatory authority and restructuring corporate debt in the face of widespread crisis.

Hagan often speaks at high-profile events across the country and around the world. In the past year, he has lectured at Queen Mary, University of London, and King's College London, Trinity College in Dublin, Columbia Law School and to Bruegel, a European think tank specializing in economics. Last year, he gave the commencement address at the University of Utah's law school graduation.

Before working at the IMF, Hagan was in private practice in New York and Tokyo. He received his law degree from Georgetown University Law Center and also holds a master's in international political economy from the London School of Economics and Political Science.

The Diplomat's Forum is the law school's most prestigious annual international and comparative law event. Its aim is to provide a platform for an open sharing of thoughts on international law and relations and the United States through the unique perspective of an insightful professional with notable diplomatic experience in the service of a foreign government.
