LAWRENCE - The Dole Institute of Politics at the University of Kansas will host "An Evening with Newt Gingrich," 7:30 p.m., Wed., Nov. 14, at the Dole Institute. This event is free and open to the public and will include a book sale and signing.

Former Speaker of the House Gingrich will be interviewed by Dole Institute Director Bill Lacy on what it is like to be a presidential candidate, the race and outcome of the recent presidential election and Gingrich's new book, "Victory at Yorktown."

"It will be perfect timing to have Speaker Gingrich here to talk about the results of the election," Lacy said. "We also look forward to a discussion of his new historical novel, 'Victory at Yorktown,' set at the decisive battle of the Revolutionary War. It will be released the day before his visit."

Gingrich is an American politician, author and political consultant. He represented Georgia's 6th congressional district as a Republican from 1979 until his resignation in 1999 and served as House Minority Whip from 1989 to 1995. Gingrich served as the 58th Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives from 1995 to 1999. He was a candidate for the 2012 Republican Party presidential nomination.

Gingrich is well-known as the architect of the "Contract With America" that led the Republican party to victory in 1994 by capturing the majority in the U.S. House for the first time in 40 years. This turn in the House earned him Time magazine's "Man of the Year" title in 1995. Under his leadership as Speaker of the House, Congress passed health, welfare, budget and tax reforms. In addition, Congress restored funding to advance defense and intelligence capabilities, an action recognized by the bipartisan 9/11 Commission. For his health care contributions, the American Diabetes Association awarded him their highest non-medical award and the March of Dimes named him their 1995 "Citizen of the Year."

Today, Gingrich serves as a board member of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Gingrich also serves with former Sen. Bob Kerrey as co-chairman of the National Commission for Quality Long-term Care.

Recognized internationally as an expert on world history, military issues and international affairs, Gingrich serves as a member of the Defense Policy Board. Gingrich is the longest-serving teacher of the Joint War Fighting course for Major Generals. He also teaches officers from all five services as a Distinguished Visiting Scholar and Professor at the National Defense University. Gingrich serves on the Terrorism Task Force for the Council on Foreign Relations. He is an editorial board member of the Johns Hopkins University journal, "Biosecurity and Bioterrorism," and is an advisory board member of the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies. Recently, Gingrich was named co-chair of the UN Task Force, a bipartisan Congressional effort to reform the United Nations.

As an author, Gingrich has published 23 books including 13 fiction and non-fiction New York Times Best Sellers. His novels are active history studies in the lessons of warfare, based on fictional accounts of historical wartime battles and their aftermaths. Additionally, Gingrich and his wife, Callista, host and produce historical and public policy documentaries.

Copies of Callista Gingrich's most recent children's book, "Land of the Pilgrims' Pride" will also be available.
