Stouffer Place Apartments closing in 2015

LAWRENCE — The University of Kansas has identified an area between 19th Street and Irving Hill Road, including Stouffer Place Apartments, as a location for new construction. Due to these university priorities, the 2014-15 year will be the final year for Stouffer Place Apartments.

The Master Plan calls for new Integrated Science buildings and landscaping in the Irving Hill Zone. This zone is part of Innovation Way, an expansion of science and research facilities that connects campus from its core near Haworth Hall to new School of Engineering facilities in the southwest part of campus.

In addition, construction of a new apartment complex for single upperclass and graduate students will be at 19th and Iowa streets, where part of Stouffer Place now stands. It is expected to be completed in the late spring of 2017.

However, Stouffer Place won't be razed immediately. It will remain in operation until June 30, 2015, when all contracts will end. KU Student Housing is still accepting applications from students for the 2014-2015 academic year. The application is at housing.ku.edu under “apartments.” A contract through June 30, 2015, provides an incoming student the opportunity to meet other students and become familiar with the Lawrence community before signing an offcampus lease.

"Stouffer Place buildings have been maintained over the years, and we’re proud of the strong, vibrant communities we have served in Stouffer," said Diana Robertson, director of Student Housing. "The buildings, however, have served their useful life. In a market analysis conducted by a third party, students with families said that they lived in Stouffer Place for the low rental rate. The market analysis revealed that it is not possible to provide new apartments at a price that is acceptable to most students with families."

KU Student Housing looks forward to its role in the KU Master Plan process and continuing to provide learning-centered communities, she said.
