LAWRENCE — The University of Kansas Audio-Reader Network, a reading and information service for the blind, visually impaired and print-disabled, has received a $5,880 grant from the Ethel and Raymond Rice Foundation. The grant will help fund Braille program guides, Internet radios and outreach expenses for the organization.

The Rice Foundation’s generosity will help Audio-Reader reach new listeners in 2015. The most effective way to spread the word about Audio-Reader’s services is through outreach, and Internet radios are placed in homes and buildings that are unable to receive the Audio-Reader radio signal. Radios are provided, free of charge, to anyone who qualifies for Audio-Reader’s services.

“There are so many individuals who can benefit from Audio-Reader’s services, but they either don’t know about us or live in a home or area that does not receive our radio signal,” said Steve Kincaid, Audio-Reader’s interim director and director of engineering. “Funds for outreach expenses and Internet radios will address both of those issues. The Braille Program guide is an important tool for our blind listeners. The Rice Foundation’s support will impact many lives in the coming year.”

Broadcasting 24 hours a day, seven days a week from campus, Audio-Reader provides free readings of newspapers, books and magazines to thousands of listeners in Kansas, Missouri and beyond. Listeners access the Audio-Reader broadcast via radio and the Internet. For more information about Audio-Reader, visit reader.ku.edu or call (785) 864-4600.
