KU accepting applications for Wounded Warrior Scholarship

LAWRENCE — The University of Kansas has announced it is now accepting applications for the 2015-16 Wounded Warrior Scholarship.

The scholarship is available to any current and incoming KU student who suffered injuries while serving in the military; is the primary caregiver of a wounded warrior; or is the surviving spouse/child of a fallen Service member. Scholarships are awarded between $3,000 and $10,000 and are renewable for up to four years of graduate or undergraduate study, provided the recipients maintain good academic standing.

“The KU family is extremely grateful for our service members and their family members who have given so much while serving our nation,” says Mike Denning, director of KU’s Graduate Military Programs. “We have a long tradition of supporting the men and women in uniform and their family; these unique scholarships are symbol of that commitment.”

Applicants to the scholarship program must be degree-seeking students currently enrolled or newly admitted to KU for the fall 2015 semester; honorably discharged or currently serving on active duty, Reserves, or National Guard; and have a disability rating from a service-related injury. Primary caregivers of a significantly disabled service member or veteran, and the spouse/child of a service member who died in the line of duty are also eligible. The deadline for application is March 15. For eligibility and application instructions, please visit gmp.ku.edu/wws.

The Office of Graduate Military Programs established the Wounded Warrior Scholarship Fund in 2012 through KU Endowment and the response by KU donors. The scholarship has since welcomed a number of individually named scholarships to the Wounded Warrior Scholarship family.  Since January 2014, KU has added the Bill and Shanthi Eckert Wounded Disabled Veteran Scholarship, KAMO Adventures Disabled Veteran Scholarship, Heart of America Patriot Foundation Wounded Warrior Scholar, and the Keener Foundation Wounded Warrior Scholarship to the family of Wounded Warrior Scholarships available to deserving student veterans.

“I can’t adequately express my gratitude for the donors who have made these exceptional scholarships possible,” Denning said.  “Each time I have the opportunity to interact with the scholarship recipients, I am reminded that these life-changing opportunities were made possible by our donors and the incredible work by KU Endowment.”
Donations to the Wounded Warrior Scholarship Fund count toward Far Above: The Campaign for Kansas, the university’s $1.2 billion comprehensive fundraising campaign.
