Former U.S. Senate candidate Greg Orman to visit for Dole event

LAWRENCE — Jimmy LaSalvia, Dole Institute of Politics spring 2015 Fellow at the University of Kansas and political strategist, commentator and author, will host Greg Orman, recent independent candidate for Senate, for the final Study Group session of  his fellowship.

LaSalvia leads All Politics is Personal — A Gay Conservative Looks at the Culture Wars. The group examines a variety of cultural issues from a nonpartisan perspective, including gay marriage, the war on women and the rise of MSNBC and Fox News.

Orman will join LaSalvia at 4 p.m. Wednesday, April 8, to lead a session titled “Politically Homeless,” which will explore the record number of Americans now choosing to not affiliate with a political party and those choosing political parties other than the two major parties.

Orman is a Kansas entrepreneur who ran for U.S. Senate against Republican incumbent Sen. Pat Roberts in the 2014 Kansas midterm elections. Orman was defeated, but his strong finish made a statement about independent and swing voters in Kansas.

In 2009, LaSalvia founded GOProud to represent gay conservatives, and it went on to become one of the most prominent gay political organizations in the country. He previously served on the national staff of the Log Cabin Republicans. He is also the author of the upcoming book “NO HOPE: Why I Left the GOP (and Why You Should Too),” scheduled for publication in September by Skyhorse Publishing.
