KU celebrating Graduate Student Appreciation Week
LAWRENCE — The University of Kansas will recognize the contributions of graduate students to the university with a range of events during national Graduate Student Appreciation Week, which is April 6-10.
Graduation Student Appreciation Week celebrates the contributions of graduate students to the mission of KU, raising awareness of their efforts in teaching, research and service.
“The goal of Graduate Student Appreciation Week is to voice our collective appreciation for all that graduate students contribute to our university, to the state of Kansas and our global society,” said Michael Roberts, dean of graduate studies. “We encourage students, faculty and staff to join us for a variety of events and to proudly wear one of the graduate student appreciation buttons that are being distributed across campus and at events throughout the week.”
KU Libraries are sponsoring an open conversation with deans 3-4 p.m. Wednesday, April 8, in the graduate student lounge in Watson Library. Graduate students are invited to attend and bring their questions and comments to share.
More than 100 students will present research on range of topics at the annual Graduate Research Competition from 1-4 p.m. Thursday, April 9, in the Kansas Union. The campus community is invited to attend and share in an afternoon of poster and oral presentation sessions. The Office of Graduate Studies and Sigma Xi will sponsor research presentation awards, with faculty volunteers serving as presentation judges.
The week will conclude with a presentation at 2:30 p.m. Friday, April 10, by Fatimah Williams Castro, associate director at University of Pennsylvania Career Services and founder of Beyond the Tenure Track. Castro will speak on career exploration strategies for nonacademic careers. The event will take place in the Malott Room in the Kansas Union.
The month of April has also been declared as Graduate and Professional Student Appreciation Month in the state of Kansas by proclamation of the governor.
