KU will present 143rd Commencement ceremony Sunday, May 17

LAWRENCE — More than 4,000 graduates are expected to take part in the traditional walk through the Memorial Campanile and down the Hill during the University of Kansas’ 143rd annual Commencement on Sunday, May 17, at Memorial Stadium.

Stadium gates open at 9 a.m. Graduates and faculty will gather on Memorial Drive at 10 a.m. and will begin the walk down Mount Oread at 10:30 a.m. The program will begin at 11:30 a.m.

Chancellor Bernadette Gray-Little will welcome graduates and guests, as well as confer degrees and deliver a farewell to the Class of 2015.

The university is awarding two honorary degrees: Doctor of Science to Ada Sue Hinshaw, leader in nursing research, and Doctor of Letters to best-selling author Sara Paretsky.

The ceremony will be streamed live and can be viewed in the Traditions area on the fourth floor of the Kansas Union.

In the event of inclement weather, an announcement will be made at 9 a.m. about arrangements for a postponed ceremony.

If the weather begins to clear by late morning, an attempt to have a postponed ceremony will be at 12:30 p.m. Graduates will assemble on Memorial Drive at noon.
