Dole Institute announces programs for late fall 2015
LAWRENCE — The Dole Institute of Politics today announced its program schedule for the final months of the fall 2015 semester, highlighted by visits from President Bill Clinton and John Della Volpe, polling director for the Harvard Institute of Politics (IOP).
All events are free, open to the public and located at the Dole Institute at the University of Kansas unless otherwise noted.
Other highlights of the final weeks of the fall include the first-ever KU Town Hall meeting for students, held with John Della Volpe, Harvard Institute of Politics polling director. The Institute’s Student Advisory Board (SAB) will also host a special event on entrepreneurship and startup culture.
“We have an outstanding slate of programming ahead to finish the semester,” said Dole Institute Director Bill Lacy. “We are excited to present several programs that will focus on KU students and their voice in politics, business and more.”
Evening programs
KU Student Town Hall Meeting: “I Lead. I Serve.”
7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 12
Harvard Institute of Politics Polling Director John Della Volpe, one of the world’s leading authorities on understanding the opinions of young people, will give a brief presentation on the IOP Polling Project and an overview of the student town hall meeting. He will then lead the discussion with KU students, who will share their views on challenges and opportunities to increasing civic engagement, politics and the 2016 presidential election. Students are encouraged to take part in this empowering discussion. Community program attendees will observe the student town hall meeting from a separate room. This program is part of KU’s 2015 Civic Engagement and KU Leadership events.
Student Advisory Board Program: Entrepreneurship 101

In our fall semester SAB program, experts from the Kansas City entrepreneurial community and thriving Startup Village will discuss what it takes to achieve entrepreneurial success, from obtaining funding to governmental support to collaborative environments and more. Speakers for the evening include Matthew Marcus, KC Startup Village; Kelly Pruneau, Women’s Capital Connection, and Ryan Weber, KCnext.
The Dole Student Advisory Board is composed of KU students committed to the work of the Dole Institute. They attend regular meetings, assist in events hosted by the Dole Institute and plan a Student Advisory Board-sponsored program each semester. Members of the Student Advisory Board receive opportunities to network with Dole Institute guests.
Dole Leadership Prize: President Bill Clinton
1 p.m. Nov. 23
President Bill Clinton will take the stage at the Lied Center, accepting the 2015 Dole Leadership Prize for his work balancing the budget and practicing bipartisanship while in office. While in office, Clinton led the U.S. to the longest economic expansion in American history and worked with both Republican and Democratic congressional majorities. The Dole Leadership Prize is awarded annually to an individual or group whose public service leadership inspires others.
Tickets for this event will be available to the general public through the Lied Center Box Office starting at 11 a.m. today, Nov. 9. Tickets are for reserved seating and will be limited to two per person. Individuals must claim their tickets in person at the box office.
Students may receive one ticket with a valid KU ID through the KU Student Union Activities (SUA) office beginning at 9 a.m. Monday, Nov. 9. A total of 500 tickets will be reserved for the KU student body.
The Dole Institute of Politics is dedicated to promoting public service, civic engagement and politics. It is located on KU’s west campus and, in addition to being home to the Robert J. Dole Archive & Special Collections, offers free public programming with world-renowned guest speakers on a variety of topics that intersect politics, as well as research and educational opportunities for students of all ages and professionals.
