KU ranked as No. 10 best school in the country for veterans

LAWRENCE — The University of Kansas has earned a top-10 spot from Military Times in its Best for Vets: Colleges 2016 rankings.

The rankings, released Nov. 9, rate schools on a number of factors, including an assessment of veteran and military student services and rates of academic achievement.

The complete rankings are available online and will be published this week in issues of Army Times, Navy Times, Air Force Times and Marine Corps Times.

KU also earned recognition from two other organizations that rate schools on how they meet veterans’ needs.

Victory Media, publisher of G.I. Jobs, STEM Jobs, Vetrepreneur and Military Spouse, named KU as a 2016 Military Friendly School. KU also has been designated as a “Top School” in the 2016 Military Advanced Education & Transition Guide to Colleges and Universities research study, which is scheduled to be released in December.

“We strive to help veterans have a great experience while they’re at KU, and these rankings speak to the success we’ve had in providing an inclusive and supportive environment for veterans on our campus,” said Randy Masten, assistant director in the Office of Graduate Military Programs. “It’s nice to be recognized with our peers and to be seen as one of the schools that are setting the example for how this work should be done.”

KU has been recognized by all three organizations each year since 2011.

About 1,000 KU students are veterans, Masten said, along with more than 250 faculty and staff.

Veterans at KU can take advantage of a number of different opportunities, including a special UNIV 101 course for freshmen and transferring veterans, to ensure they can gain access to the various services for them on campus. Veteran-specific tutoring services are available. KU also hosts three veteran meet-and-greet mixers each year.

Additional facilities to assist veterans are planned for the future. A new 3,000-square-foot Student Veteran Center is planned for the remodeled Summerfield Hall.
