KU community remembers opera singer, music professor Norman Paige

LAWRENCE — The University of Kansas community is remembering Norman Paige, a professor emeritus of vocal performance. Paige died Aug. 25 in Mission Hills. He was 87.

“Norman Paige’s career was an inspiration to many, whether one saw him on an opera stage or in front of a classroom,” said Chancellor Bernadette Gray-Little. “On behalf of the entire university, I offer our deepest condolences to his family, friends, colleagues and all who knew him well.”

Paige joined the university in 1969. He taught in the School of Music until he retired in 2002.

John Stephens, professor of voice, described his former colleague as a brilliant and talented man.

“He translated his wonderful singing career into greatness as a voice teacher and mentor for his students,” Stephens said. “To me, Norman showed what being passionate about music is all about.”

A celebration of life will be announced at a later date.
