KU to host international symposium on the Scholarship of Social Engagement

LAWRENCE — Supported by an Interdisciplinary Starter Grant from The Commons, the University of Kansas will host an international symposium on the Scholarship of Social Engagement.

This symposium, which will take place Thursday, Oct. 20, and Friday, Oct. 21, will feature internationally recognized thought leaders on the topic of critical engagement. The program will examine theoretical underpinnings of this scholarship through both theoretical and applied approaches. Scholars will develop a framework for the critical inquiry and review of the public effects of such discourse and design.

The grant was awarded to Joe Colistra, associate professor of architecture; Martha Rabbani, lecturer in peace & conflict studies; Jeremy Shellhorn, associate professor of design and associate dean for strategic initiatives in the School of Architecture, Design & Planning, and Amanda Schwegler, Center for Civic and Social Responsibility. The symposium organizers also include Farhana Ferdous, lecturer in architecture, and Farhan Karim, assistant professor of architecture.

“The Commons’ seed grant allows us bring together thought leaders from around the world that are practicing and theorizing social engagement. We are primarily investigating what it is that elevates action-based social engagement to the level of scholarship,” Colistra said.
