Stony Brook dean to speak on the value of bringing research into the public discourse

LAWRENCE — Sacha Kopp, dean of the College of Arts & Sciences at Stony Brook University, will offer a public talk to address differences between communicating within the realm of academic research and contributing to public discourse, and ultimately, what can be done to bridge the divide.

Last year, Kopp, a physicist by training, co-led a series of workshops at Stony Brook University that helped faculty and students learn how to write about research for public audiences. Seeing an opportunity for more University of Kansas researchers to share their work with broad, public audiences, The Commons invited Kopp to speak on the subject. He will give a public lecture and lead a workshop for graduate students. Some questions he will address: How can academics meaningfully contribute to public discourse? What happens when these two cultures collide? Who loses if they don't?

He will speak on “The Ivory Tower Meets the Public Marketplace of Ideas” at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 14, at The Commons, in Spooner Hall. On March 15, beginning at 9:30 a.m., he will lead a workshop for graduate students in which students will gain experience communicating about their research to the public. Interested students must register for the workshop by emailing thecommons@ku.edu.

This programming is offered in conjunction with the exploration of The Future University at The Commons and in concert with Prof^2, an ongoing professional development workshop series for graduate students interested in both academic and nonacademic careers led by the College Office of Graduate Affairs.
