KU Public Safety Office releases 2016 crime statistics

LAWRENCE — The University of Kansas’ Lawrence campus saw a 2 percent increase in crime in 2016, KU’s Public Safety Office announced today with the annual release of its crime statistics.

The Public Safety Office handled 770 criminal offenses during 2016, up slightly from 757 in 2015.

Drug-related offenses saw a decrease, while theft and criminal damage to property both increased.

There was a rise in bicycle thefts in 2016, most of which involved a cable or chain being cut. The Public Safety Office reminds the campus community to invest in a quality U-lock and secure all bikes properly.

The university continues to expand the use of closed-circuit security cameras across campus and has also increased the number of police officers and security officers on campus.

“The university continues to increase its use of technology, but employing more people to provide a security presence or actively patrol campus is also very helpful,” said Chief of Police Chris Keary.

The KU Public Safety Office provides year-round law enforcement, security, emergency communications and emergency management for the Lawrence campus community.

A complete list of all offenses reported to the department from 2007 to 2016 can be found online.
