University Press of Kansas hosting annual touring book show

LAWRENCE — The University Press of Kansas will once again display the AAUP Book, Jacket and Journal Show, set for March 27-April 7. The public is invited to view this free, hands-on exhibition from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays at UPK, 2502 Westbrooke Circle.

Now in its 51st year, the show is a traveling exhibition of 37 books and 40 jackets/covers recognized for excellence in design and manufacture. Admirers of this art form and graphic designers alike are encouraged to pick up and examine the books to better view interior design details. The winners were selected from more than 600 entries submitted by American university presses. The judges chose books based on superior layout of typography or illustration; jackets and journals were judged for outstanding overall design.

Complimentary copies of the show catalog containing design specifications and judges’ comments will be available at UPK.

Judges for this year’s show included Kimberly Glyder, principal at Kimberly Glyder Design; Benjamin Shaykin, Providence-based designer and educator, Henk van Assen, founding principal of HvAD, a multidisciplinary design studio in New York City, and Daphne Geismar, who plans, designs, and produces award-winning books for art museums.

The AAUP Book, Jacket, and Journal Show was established in 1965 to recognize meritorious achievement and as a means for members of the Association of American University Presses to share ideas for “intelligent, creative and resourceful bookmaking.”
