KU student nominated for Winston Churchill Scholarship

LAWRENCE — A University of Kansas senior has been nominated for the Winston Churchill Scholarship, which provides one year of study at the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom.

Sarah Anderson, senior in environmental studies and English, is competing for the award. The Winston Churchill Foundation annually awards scholarships in honor of Sir Winston Churchill. Up to 15 scholarships will be awarded in this year’s national competition.

KU is the only institution in Kansas on the approved list of colleges and universities in the U.S. that may nominate students for the award.

At KU, the nomination process is coordinated through the Office of Fellowships in Undergraduate Studies. The award gives winners the opportunity to pursue study in fields in the sciences, engineering or mathematics. The award will lead to a Master of Philosophy or a Master of Advanced Study.

Finalists will be selected and interviewed in January and the scholars announced shortly thereafter.

Former KU student Larissa Lee won a Churchill Scholarship in 1999.

Anderson is the daughter of Lee and Lori Anderson of Lowell, Arkansas. Anderson will earn a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Studies and a Bachelor of Arts in English with a creative writing emphasis in May. She has completed the Undergraduate Research certificate and is on track to complete the University Honors Program. Anderson’s long-term career goal is to enter a research career focused on bee ecology. She has been involved with several research projects based in Kansas utilizing the Kansas Field Station and also participated in a Research Experience for Undergraduates program in Turkey.
