LAWRENCE – Kansas Public Radio ended another successful fall membership drive with 1,778 listener pledges, bringing in just over $327,000 and surpassing last year's campaign.

KPR’s 10-day membership drive, known as Fall Fanfare, ran Sept. 19 through Sept. 28 with the help of more than 50 volunteers. In addition to $271,571 in listener pledges, KPR met $56,417 in challenge grants, which are provided by an individual, company or foundation whose donation amount is dependent on the amount of money raised by listeners within a predetermined time slot. Often, challenge grants entail a 100 percent dollar-for-dollar match.

KPR was able to cut seven hours from Fall Fanfare 2018, thanks to an increase in sustaining members. Sustaining members contribute a monthly gift that has no end date, eliminating the need to call in and pledge during a membership drive.

The station received pledges from a total of 1,778 members, including 231 new members 1,292 renewing members and 255 rejoining members at the conclusion of the membership drive.

During each membership drive, the regularly scheduled programming is interrupted for about 15 minutes out of every hour while KPR’s on-air hosts ask listeners to pledge their support. The most popular pledge amount is $120, or just $10 per month, and supporters who pledge this amount or more are eligible for a KPR Member Card.

All tax-deductible donations during spring and fall membership drives directly support KPR’s local and national programming.

Volunteers answered phones from 6 a.m. until 7 p.m. each day during the drive. Area restaurants donated meals and beverages for volunteers’ breakfasts, lunches, dinners and snacks.

Although the drive has concluded, listeners can still donate online.
