Elections expert available to discuss Democratic debates

LAWRENCE — On July 30 and 31, the second of 12 Democratic primary debates are scheduled for the 2020 presidential election.

The field will feature 20 candidates, with 10 participating each night at Detroit’s Fox Theatre. Joe Biden and Kamala Harris will face off during the first night. Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren headline the following evening.

Patrick Miller, assistant professor of political science at the University of Kansas, is available to discuss these debates with media.

“The critical aspect of this is for candidates to stand out in some way that grabs voter attention, whether they are currently at the bottom of the pack or the top. It is still early enough for the landscape of the field to change as the months progress, and this is just another opportunity for candidates to make their mark,” Miller said.

Miller earned his doctorate in political science (with concentrations in American politics and research methodology) from the University of North Carolina. His research focuses on American politics (specifically elections), public opinion, political psychology and survey methods. And he has served as lead author on studies about partisan rivalry, political discussion practices in social media and the 2016 Southern electorate.
