LAWRENCE — The Academic Achievement & Access Center (AAAC) changed its name, effective June 1, to the University Academic Support Centers, or UASC.

The center began in 2004 as a merger of two offices – the Student Development Center and Services for Students with Disabilities. Since then, more programs have been added to assist students in their academic success and enhance their KU collegiate experience, according to Andrew Shoemaker, center director, including the addition of the KU Writing Center in 2017.

“Over the past 16 years, we have created new, engaging programs, such as Supplemental Instruction, to support student learning. The addition of the Writing Center complements the excellent work being done in Tutoring Services and Student Access Services,” Shoemaker said. “Our name change reflects the increase in the variety of services and programs we offer to both undergraduate and graduate students at KU.”

As part of the center’s name change, academic consultations, Tutoring Services and Supplemental Instruction programs will become the Academic Learning Center, and Student Access Services will change to Student Access Center. The KU Writing Center’s name will remain the same.

The UASC will continue its mission to help students: have full and equal access to all facilities, classes, events and activities KU has to offer; engage in active and collaborative learning in and out of the classroom; and attain their academic and personal goals. UASC also remains part of the recently renamed Office of Academic Success, formerly known as the Office of Undergraduate Studies.
