Students receive Gilman scholarships for international study


LAWRENCE — Nine University of Kansas students were selected as recent recipients of the prestigious Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, to study or intern abroad in seven countries.  

Gilman Scholars are selected from a group of highly competitive undergraduates for study abroad funding. Recipients are awarded up to $5,000 to apply toward the cost of study or interning abroad. A key goal of the Gilman scholarship program is to provide opportunities for students to study in foreign countries and regions regardless of socioeconomic constraints.

The recent award recipients from the University of Kansas are listed below.

Gilman Scholars:

  • Alyssa Carson, a junior from Hutchinson, will intern in Singapore  in summer 2021
  • Jesus Briseno, a senior from Overland Park, will study abroad in South Korea for academic year 2021-2022
  • Savannah Glaves, a junior from Easton, will study abroad in South Korea  in summer 2021
  • Lydia Juengling, a junior from Marthasville, Missouri, will study abroad in Australia in fall 2021
  • John Racy, a sophomore from Lawrence, will study abroad in Ukraine in summer 2021
  • Roman Ruiz, a sophomore from Topeka, will study abroad in Costa Rica for academic year 2021-2022
  • Thaliah Ruiz, a sophomore from Lawrence, will study abroad in the United Kingdom in summer 2021
  • Walter Sours, a junior from Frontenac, will study abroad in Japan in spring 2021
  • Olivia Tigges, a junior from Olathe, will study abroad in the United Kingdom in spring 2021.
