KU team will compete in Final Four of National Debate Tournament


LAWRENCE — The University of Kansas team of Azja Butler, Lansing, and Ross Fitzpatrick, Leawood, has reached the Final Four at the National Debate Tournament hosted by Harvard University. They are the 18th KU team to reach the Final Four of the national tournament.

Azja and Ross were 8-0 in the preliminary rounds and qualified for the single-elimination rounds as the top seed. They defeated the University of Minnesota in the Sweet 16 on a 5-0 decision. They defeated the University of California Fullerton in the Elite Eight on a 4-3 decision to advance to the final four where they will meet the University of Michigan.

The KU team of Nate Martin, Lansing, and Graham Revare, Shawnee, advanced to the Elite Eight before losing a 4-1 split decision to Dartmouth College. They defeated the University of Pittsburgh in the first elimination round on a 5-0 decision to advance to the Sweet 16. In the Sweet 16 they defeated the University of California at Berkeley on a 5-0 decision. They were 6-2 in the preliminary rounds.

The KU team of Mickey McMahon, Leawood, and Michael Scott, Glenview, Illinois, went 7-1 in the preliminary rounds and advanced to the Sweet 16 before losing to the University of Michigan on a 5-2 decision.
