Architecture lecturer honored as a top educator

LAWRENCE — America’s Best Architecture & Design Schools 2016-17 recently named University of Kansas School of Architecture, Design & Planning lecturer Anne Patterson as one of its 25 most admired educators who teach in U.S. schools.

The Best Design Schools survey is one of several DesignIntelligence reports published each year by Atlanta-based Greenway Communications. The company specializes in topics relevant to the architecture and design professions.

DesignIntelligence said its staff selected these education role models with input from thousands of design professionals, academic department heads and students. Educators and administrators from the disciplines of architecture, industrial design, interior design and landscape architecture are considered for inclusion.

They wrote of Patterson, “This lecturer at KU does not use high-tech nor business skills to inspire. Instead she uses hand drawing and illustration to teach students how to communicate via superb hands-on-skills. As one student said in a nominating letter: She finds the inner architect and builds self-confidence in hand drawing as a lifelong skill.”

“I love my job: Opening minds and unlocking the creative potential of beginning architecture students is a privilege,” said Patterson, who lectures for the Department of Architecture. “Teaching in the foundations year is an opportunity to set the tone for the studio experience, to establish a curiosity about the visual world and to trigger a lifetime love of architecture.

“The students here at KU have an impressive work ethic and an eagerness to learn, and I take their trust in me seriously,” she said. “My goal is to ignite in them their curiosity, creativity and a quest for excellence, and to have fun doing it. To be acknowledged as an admired educator for doing so is truly an honor.”

“Those whom Anne teaches adore her, and wherever I go alumni are sure to mention how much she influenced them. She is deeply committed to our students and has inspired a generation with her creative approach to teaching,” said Dean Mahesh Daas.

Patterson has a post-graduate diploma in architecture with distinction and a bachelor's degree of architecture from the Edinburgh College of Art, Heriot-Watt University, in Edinburgh, Scotland. She is a licensed architect in the United Kingdom and has taught at KU since 1993. She also has extensive experience working as a professional architectural illustrator.
