Architecture students' work on display during KC Design Week

LAWRENCE — University of Kansas students will participate in two events during Kansas City Design Week.

Department of Architecture drawings and models will be displayed from 8-11 p.m. Friday, March 27, in the MoCoLab at the Kansas City Center for Architecture & Design, 1810 McGee, Kansas City, Missouri. The MoCoLab (short for "mobile collaboratory") is an Airstream trailer that was restored into a mobile community center by students enrolled in Associate Professor Nils Gore's Studio 409 class last spring and summer. Associate Professor Shannon Criss said that the drawings and models will have a special emphasis on public interest design. 

In addition, an exhibition titled "Emerging Economies: KC Makers and the Creative Class" will run Thursday, March 26, through April 6 at the Kansas City Design Center. The students produced the design research and proposals, which focus on transforming the Linwood Midtown Neighborhood into a district of creative, collaborative maker-spaces.

Their proposals are intended to help stimulate the growth of amenities in the area such as pop-up stores, farmers' markets, bike shops and housing. The work was produced last fall in studios taught by Criss and Adjunct Professor Matt Kleinmann.

The Kansas City Design Center is located at 1020 Baltimore, Kansas City, Missouri. A reception will take place from 5:30-7:30 opening night, March 26. Gallery hours are 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
