LAWRENCE — James Lichtenberg, associate dean in the School of Education at the University of Kansas, has been selected to receive the 2015 Lifetime Achievement Award, granted on behalf of the Society of Counseling Psychology Section for the Promotion of Psychotherapy Sciences.

The Society of Counseling Psychology is a division of the American Psychological Association, and it is composed of a number of sections that are formal organizations within the society designed to promote issues in specific interest areas.

The Section for the Promotion of Psychotherapy Sciences encourages, facilitates and promotes counseling and psychotherapy process and outcome research as well as the application of such research to the practice of counseling and psychotherapy. Its aim is to inform the profession and the public regarding psychotherapy research and its applications

The board unanimously agreed that the 2015 award be granted to Lichtenberg based on his significant and important contributions to the science of psychotherapy and to the field of counseling psychology.

“It is an honor and extremely gratifying to receive this recognition. I’m very grateful,” he said.

Lichtenberg will retire June 1 after 40 years of service. In addition to his role as associate dean, he also has served the university as professor and the director of training for the doctoral program in counseling psychology as well as the director of the University Counseling Center, now Counseling & Psychology Services.
