Be ready to welcome international students

International students take part in the annual homecoming paradeLAWRENCE — Aug. 1 is moving day for many in the Lawrence area. It also signals the start of an annual movement of international students to the University of Kansas.

“Often new international students can be a bit disoriented in arranging for transportation from KCI to the campus and even in finding their way around campus in the first few days,” said Chuck Olcese, director of International Student Services. The office is asking all Lawrence faculty and staff to watch for any students who may seem tentative in their surroundings and offer a helping hand.

“In recent years we have seen an increase of students arriving from over 100 countries around the world,” Olcese said. “Students begin arriving this week for Orientation and will continue to come to campus over the next two weeks.”

Sometimes the new students can be identified by the suitcases they are lugging around campus or who appear to be looking for a particular building, he said. Faculty and staff are encouraged to reach out to any student and offer help or a message of welcome. Those who are unable to stop at such opportunities are encouraged to contact ISS and let staff know assistance may be needed. Contact information:
