KU Libraries will host 'Capoeira and Globalization' on Oct. 23


LAWRENCE — KU Libraries will host a Gallery Lecture Series presentation by Luciano Tosta, associate professor of Brazilian literature & culture in the Department of Spanish & Portuguese. The presentation, titled “Capoeira and Globalization,” is the first lecture in the fall Gallery Lecture Series lineup and will take place at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 23, in Watson Library, third floor West.

Tosta will discuss capoeira, the Afro-Brazilian expression of art, culture and resistance, and its connection to globalization. Members of the KU Capoeira Club will follow the discussion with a capoeira demonstration. Learn more online at rockcha.lk/Capoeira.

The fall Gallery Lecture Series is developed in conjunction with the Haricombe Gallery exhibition, “Strong Foundations: 100 Years of Hispanism at the University of Kansas,” on display through January 2020. The Gallery Lecture Series features interdisciplinary lectures and creative works from scholars and researchers across campus and the community. The second lecture in the fall Gallery Lecture Series is scheduled for 1 p.m. Nov. 12 in Watson Library and will feature “Connection Through Poetry and Prose,” a presentation by Ignacio Carvajal, poet and assistant professor in the Department of Spanish & Portuguese; Margarita Alely Nuñez Arroyo, graduate student, Department of American Studies; and Polo Camacho, graduate student, Department of Philosophy.
