Department announces new sport management minor

LAWRENCE – A new minor in sport management will provide students at the University of Kansas with a core set of skills, including literacy in sport marketing, sport finance, personnel management and the sociological aspects of sport. It is designed for students with an interest in the theory of the sporting context as well as students who will use principles of the sport field in their anticipated profession.

The sport management minor was developed in response to student interest.

“Sport is an extremely popular context and area of study, both here at KU and off campus,” said Jordan Bass, associate chair for the Department of Health, Sport, and Exercise Sciences. “The fact that the campuswide Introduction to Sport Management course is full every semester suggests that students have a high interest in the study of sport management.”

Students who wish to declare the sport management minor at KU are required to have completed 40 credit hours of general coursework with a cumulative GPA of 2.5. Completion of Introduction to Sport Management (HSES 289) is also required, though students are able to enroll in HSES 289 as a co- or prerequisite for the minor.

Once declared, students pursuing the minor in sport management will complete 18 credit hours of coursework, which includes two elective courses to customize the minor for individual interests. Elective courses include sport facilities, sport in film, sport communication and experiential learning in sport.

“We are thrilled to extend our minor options,” said Rick Ginsberg, dean of the School of Education. “Both the education studies minor as well as the sport management minor allow us to widen the access to our curriculum and our faculty for all students across campus.”

The Department of Health, Sport, and Exercise Sciences is housed in the School of Education at KU. The KU School of Education is a nationally-ranked school, serving educators and health/sport/exercise professionals to prepare them as leaders.
