Design students win AIGA KC Awards

LAWRENCE — University of Kansas Department of Design students won four out of five student Juror's Choice awards from the Kansas City chapter of the American Institute of Graphic Arts.

KU also won 33 of 45 student honors at the annual A10 Awards ceremony, which was Sept. 20. Additionally, two students were awarded AIGA Kansas City Scholarships, and Design Professor Patrick Dooley was honored with the AIGA KC Fellow Award.

The Juror’s Choice Awards give judges the opportunity to give special recognition to the project of their choosing. This year the projects included packaging for a line of dog treats; graphics for last spring’s KU Design Week; Evoke, a mockup of a magazine about sustainability, and a book on the typography of fire stations.

“The transition from ‘practicing at design’ and ‘mastering the principles of design’ is an awesome thing to see in students’ work,” wrote juror Kelly Stevens, of Seven Creative in Austin of her selection, Evoke. “It really exemplifies students who have the principles of design firmly in their grasp.”

Sydney Goldstein, Overland Park, and Alexis Griffith, Lawrence, received the scholarships. These are intended to help transform young design talent into design leaders. The $1,000 scholarships may be used toward tuition, books, computer equipment and software, or other educational expenses.

The Kansas City AIGA chapter offered the scholarship for the first time in 2006, and a KU student has earned the award seven of the last nine years. The students submit a portfolio, essay and resume, which are judged by three local professionals.

"I am thrilled for Sydney and Lexi. They are a talented, motivated and involved students,” said Andrea Herstowski, associate professor and chair of the Design Department.

AIGA KC Fellow recipient Dooley has been teaching at KU since 1993, and he has been lauded by faculty, students and former students.

“Not everyone is lucky enough to have a professor make such a lasting impression on their life,” said Design Department alumna Morgan Georgie, of Ampersand Design Studio, Prairie Village.

Department of Design Chair Andrea Herstowski said, “Patrick and other faculty have helped a generation of students become successful designers. In fact, more than 20 of our visual communications graduates won awards from AIGA KC this year. We are extremely proud of them.”

The AIGA is a professional association for designers. It is committed to furthering excellence in design as a broadly defined discipline, strategic tool for business and a vital cultural force. AIGA is the place design professionals turn to exchange ideas and information, participate in critical analysis and research, and advance education and the ethical practice of design.
