Economist, social capital scholar to give talk


LAWRENCE — The School of Business and Department of Psychology have invited John Helliwell, professor emeritus of economics at the University of British Columbia and a senior fellow of the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research, to give a lecture at the University of Kansas.

His presentation, “Building Better Lives: Good Governance and Well-Being,” will take place at 7 p.m. Oct. 9 in Woodruff Auditorium in the Kansas Union. It is free and open to the public.

Helliwell’s research focuses on the connections between personal well-being and economic well-being. He is co-director of CIFAR’s program on Social Interactions, Identity and Well-Being, a member of the National Statistics Council and a research associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research. KU social psychology professor Nyla Branscombe also serves as a fellow of CIFAR.

Helliwell graduated from the University of British Columbia in 1959 and lectured for a brief period before becoming a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford, where he earned a doctorate in economics. Helliwell has held various academic and administrative appointments at University of British Columbia for more than 30 years.

Author of many studies, Helliwell crafted the World Happiness Report that was submitted to the United Nations Conference on Happiness in 2012, along with many other published works, including “International Differences in Well-Being” and “Well-Being for Public Policy.”
