Exhibition showcasing art and illustration by D.D. Tyler to open July 12 in Kenneth Spencer Research Library
LAWRENCE — The University of Kansas Libraries will open a new exhibition in Kenneth Spencer Research Library in July. “The Art of Nature: Natural History Art and Illustration by D.D. Tyler” traces the career of artist Diana Dee Tyler through a lifetime of exploration and adventure.
The exhibition will feature works of art recently donated to Spencer Research Library by Tyler, a KU graduate who received her bachelor’s degree in fine arts in 1970. Upon graduation, she spent several years backpacking around the world, pursuing interests in nature, art and world cultures.
“We are excited to feature what is truly a fascinating assortment of illustrations, artworks and ephemera,” said Kevin L. Smith, dean of libraries. “The generous donation of artworks from D.D. Tyler will no doubt enhance the collections at Spencer Research Library.”
In 1977, Tyler and her husband established Tyler Publishing in Maine, where she created natural history prints, posters and notecards for the business. Throughout her career, Tyler has created many T-shirt designs for a variety of organizations, which will also be on display.
“While processing Tyler’s plant and animal drawings, the library staff were enchanted by their beauty and scientific accuracy,” said Karen Cook, special collections curator. “The gift of Tyler’s artistic achievements have added outstanding examples by a 20thcentury artist to our strengths in natural-history illustration from earlier centuries.”
The opening reception will be held in the foyer of Spencer Research Library on July 12. The event will begin at 5:30 p.m. with a cocktail reception, followed by brief remarks from Cook at 6:15 p.m.
