Furniture, food, clothing donated from student moveout

LAWRENCE — KU Surplus, along with Student Housing and other community partners, collected nonperishable food items, unwanted clothing and surplus furniture during the student moveout rush in May.

Student Housing donated more than 130 pieces of lounge and lobby furniture, along with approximately 400 carpet squares from McCollum Hall, to Sterling College, located in Rice County. Additionally, more than 500 bed sets and study chairs were donated to My Father’s House, which provides transitional housing for the rural homeless in Kansas. More than 100 desk sets were donated to Habitat for Humanity of Topeka and Kids International, an early childhood education center, and more than 500 mattresses were donated to Sleepyhead Beds, which will sanitize and distribute the mattresses to Kansas City children who do not have a comfortable place to sleep.

About 1,200 pounds of nonperishable food was collected by KU Surplus for Just Food, the food bank supplying more than 40 agencies in Douglas County with donations.

More than 4,600 pounds of gently used garments were donated to the Sustainability Action Network, which in turn sold the items to benefit the Lawrence Creates Makerspace, a community center that provides workshops and training for artists, designers and hobbyists. An additional 6,725 pounds of clothing were donated to Planet Aid-Kansas City. Planet Aid also supports local communities, providing clothing and shoes to nonprofits located in Kansas and Missouri.

The Sustainability Action Network also received hundreds of small appliances, housewares, room accents and organizers donated by KU students.

All recipient organizations are pre-approved through KU Property Accounting Services.
