Hitting the road: KU Engineering SELF Fellows traveling to Lone Star State

LAWRENCE — The booming business environment of Central and South Texas will serve as a real-world classroom for 20 members of the senior class of the Self Engineering Leadership Fellows at the University of Kansas School of Engineering.

The group will travel to Austin and Houston, Texas, from Aug. 13-20, where they will visit some of the world’s leading engineering and technology firms, including NASA, Chevron Phillips Chemical, GTT North America and Emerson Electric. The experience is known as “SELF on the Road.”

"We are excited to build and strengthen existing relationships and establish new connections in Austin and Houston that will continue to benefit KU Engineering," said Adam Smith, senior coordinator with the SELF Program.

Other stops on this year’s SELF on the Road tour include ExxonMobil, Square Root Inc., the University of Texas and two active construction sites led by American Constructors. The fellows will also be the featured guests at a KU Alumni Association reception for Houston area alumni on Aug. 18.

“This trip provides SELF Fellows with valuable context to what they learn on campus and valuable connections with industry and alumni,” Smith said. “The overall goal of the SELF on the Road experience is to provide a real-world experience that ties together all the pillars of the SELF Program.”
