Coaching workshop will focus on student-athlete success

LAWRENCE — The University of Kansas School of Education’s Department of Health, Sport, and Exercise Sciences has partnered with Greenbush to host the 2016 Fall Coaches Workshop for the region’s PK-12 coaches and educators.  

The workshop, “Developing a Blueprint for Success,” is geared toward understanding today’s student-athletes, the research behind effective training and how to motivate young athletes.

The full-day workshop will begin at 8 a.m. Nov. 7 at the Greenbush Eudora Resource Center in Eudora. Online registration is required on or before Nov. 4. The cost to participate is $75 per individual, and interested participants can register here. In addition, students may attend at a reduced rate of $40 and are able to register online here. Onsite registration for both audiences will also be available.

“We are excited to partner with Greenbush for this year’s Fall Coaches Workshop,” said Jordan Bass, associate chair of the Department of Health, Sport, and Exercise Sciences. “Coaches serve a vital role in the development of students in the state of Kansas, and we’re thrilled to provide them with additional tools to help students be successful both on and off the field."

The keynote lecture, “Changing A Culture,” will be given by Sheahon Zenger, athletic director for Kansas Athletics. As part of his keynote address, Zenger will reserve time for questions from workshop participants.

Other workshop speakers include Josh Pound, sports information director at Benedictine College; Bobby Nichols, learning specialist for the KU men's basketball program; Jordan Bass, associate chair; Andy Fry, professor; Mary Fry, associate professor, and Dawn Emerson, assistant professor, all from the Department of Health, Sport and Exercise Sciences at KU.

More than 60 people attended the coaches workshop last spring, and more than 100 participants are anticipated this fall.

“Greenbush is equally excited to provide coaches with high-quality professional development through collaboration with the department at KU,” said Mark Dodge, director of distance learning for Greenbush. “This workshop will expose coaches to current research, best practices, and a strong professional network of coaches and experts who are focused on the growth and development of today's athletes.”
