Installation artist to visit campus

LAWRENCE — Using materials to evoke an emotional memory, artist Lynne Yamamoto creates installations that speak to a larger social and historical context. Yamamoto will give a visiting artist lecture at 6 p.m. Thursday, March 26, in the Spencer Museum of Art Auditorium. The lecture is free, and the public is welcome.

“Nothing compares with the opportunity to hear an artist talk about their work firsthand,” said Maria Velasco, associate professor of visual art. “Artists talk more about their practice and their learning curve in person. They often refer to lesson learned, roadblocks that helped them grow and similar invaluable insights.”

Aside from the lecture, Yamamoto will conduct graduate studio visits and visit Velasco’s installation art class. Following the formal presentations, students have the opportunity to ask questions and to make a personal – often lasting – connection.

Yamamoto currently teaches 3-D design and installation art at Smith College. Her recent work includes an installation at the Mattress Factory in Pittsburgh. She has had one-person shows at the Contemporary Museum in Honolulu; P.S. 1; the Greg Kucera Gallery and George Suyama Architect Space in Seattle; the Whitney Museum of American Art at Altria; Rhode Island School of Design; and the Munson-Williams-Proctor Institute in Utica, New York. Internationally, she has exhibited in Construction in Process in Poland; the Louisiana Museum in Denmark; Leeds Beckett University in England, and she has had residencies in Ireland and Japan.

The Department of Visual Art is one of four departments in the School of the Arts. As part of the KU College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the School of the Arts offers fresh possibilities for collaboration between the arts and the humanities, sciences, social sciences, international and interdisciplinary studies.
