Johnson Award offers funds for interdisciplinary studies

LAWRENCE — The Humanities Program at the University of Kansas is now accepting applications for the annual Ted Johnson Interrelations of the Humanities and the Arts Award.

The award was established by Professor Emeritus J. Theodore (“Ted”) Johnson, who worked at KU from 1968 to 2001. He served as a professor of French and chair of the French and Italian department, and he frequently taught for the Humanities Program. One of the classes he taught was the Interrelations of the Humanities and the Arts. Johnson is also well-known for his annual Stop Day tours of the Lawrence campus, which he began in 1992.

Faculty and graduate students in the humanities or fine arts as well as undergraduate students are welcome to apply for this $500 award. Funds may be used to defray travel expenses to a library, museum or exhibition; to attend a concert or theatrical performance; to acquire materials or to fund release time from other employment to enable completion of the project.

Preference will be given to applicants whose project includes French language, literature or culture as an integral part of their plan.

Application Instructions

Applicants should provide the following:

1) A one-page description of the project for which funding is requested;

2) A one-page narrative describing the applicant’s qualifications for undertaking the project and indicating expected results of the project as well as benefits of the award;

3) One letter of support from a professor or adviser in the case of students, or from a colleague or departmental chair in the case of faculty.

 Application materials should be emailed to the Humanities Program at hum@ku.edu in PDF format, with “Ted Johnson Award” in the subject line.
