Math professor will be honored for distinguished teaching

LAWRENCE — Jeremy Martin, a University of Kansas professor of mathematics long recognized for his commitment to teaching excellence, has been named by the Kansas Section of the Mathematical Association of America (KSMAA) as the recipient of its 2019 award for Distinguished College or University Teaching of Mathematics.  The award was presented at the 2019 KSMAA annual meeting earlier this spring at Pittsburg State University.

In 1991, the Mathematical Association of America instituted the awards in order to honor college or university teachers who have been widely recognized for their instructional success. Each year, every section of the MAA is invited to select a college or university teacher to be honored. As this year’s KSMAA winner, Martin is then eligible to be the KSMAA nominee for the prestigious Deborah and Franklin Tepper Haimo Award for Distinguished Teaching of Mathematics.

Martin came to KU in 2005 and was promoted to full professor in 2016. He has mentored undergraduate honors students, co-organized workshops for K-12 mathematics teachers, and he is currently co-organizing the regional Graduate Research Workshop in Combinatorics. He received the Don and Pat Morrison Foundation Award for Excellence in Teaching (2013), G. Baley Price Award for Excellence in Teaching (selected by mathematics graduate students, 2013) and the ING Excellence in Teaching Award (2011), all from KU.
