KU celebrating Campus Sustainability Week
LAWRENCE — As part of the annual Campus Sustainability Week, the University of Kansas is hosting a series of events to highlight key initiatives of the program and celebrate progress toward the goals of the campus sustainability plan, Building Sustainable Traditions. Those goals address alternative transportation, preservation of the historical and natural landscape, recycling and waste minimization, and energy conservation. The events, organized by the Center for Sustainability will include:
Monday, Sept. 28, 11 a.m.-1 p.m., Wescoe Beach
Bikers’ Break: At this biker appreciation event, those biking by are invited to stop in for a Lawrence bike map, stickers, snacks, safety tips and more. KU Cycling Club will also be in hand to provide safety checks and adjustments to make sure bicyles are in good shape.
Tuesday, Sept. 29, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m, Stauffer-Flint lawn
Tree Scavenger Hunt: All are invited to test their tree identification skills on a native tree scavenger hunt. Clues will lead teams through campus in search of 12 historic trees.
Wednesday, Sept. 30, 11 a.m. – 1 p.m., Wescoe Beach
Rock Chalk Recycle and Waste Audit: With KU’s recent transition to single-stream recycling, it’s an opportune time to take measure of just how well the KU community is diverting waste on campus. With the help of volunteers, KU Recycling will audit and weigh materials from both the recycling and land-filled streams in order to benchmark our success.
Thursday, Oct. 1, 4 p.m.-6 p.m., Prairie Acre
Picnic at the Prairie: The Prairie Acre Restoration Project is the latest effort in preserving and proactively maintaining KU’s native landscape. Members of the campus and Lawrence communities are invited learn about the historic Prairie Acre and what measures are being taken to restore it.
Friday, Oct. 2, 5:30 p.m.-7 p.m., Wescoe Beach
Friday Night Lights Out: Volunteers are invited to help the center ensure that unnecessary lights and equipment are shut down for the weekend. Teams will be dispersed to buildings to tackle common spaces while learning about energy usage and conservation measures at KU.
