KU announces Sustainability Leadership Award recipients
LAWRENCE — The University of Kansas Center for Sustainability will recognize 10 individuals and initiatives with Sustainability Leadership Awards on April 22 as part of KU's Earth Day festivities. The event will take place at 3:30 p.m. on the Dance Pavilion west of Potter Lake.
This is the ninth year that the Sustainability Leadership Awards will recognize outstanding leadership and creativity in addressing issues of ecology, efficiency and equity on the KU campus and in the broader community. Award recipients are nominated by their peers and selected by a committee that includes past award winners.
“This is our chance to showcase the network of people and projects from all parts of campus working to make KU a more resourceful, mindful and inclusive place to learn and work,” said Kim Criner, education and outreach coordinator in the Center for Sustainability.
This year, the center introduces two new award categories: Energy Conservation and Alumni Leadership.
The 2016 Sustainability Leadership Award recipients by category:
- Student Leadership: Christopher Carey, political science
- Student Leadership: Abigail Clem, architectural engineering
- Faculty Leadership: Ward Lyles, assistant professor, urban planning
- Faculty Scholarship: Rachel McDonald, assistant professor, psychology
- Staff Leadership: Landscape Architecture Department, Design and Construction Management
- Organization Award: Engineers Without Borders, advised by Matt O’Reilly
- Social Justice: Cindy Nguyen, applied behavioral science and French
- Energy Conservation: Ann Smith, facility manager, Multidisciplinary Research Building
- Greek Life: Sigma Kappa, Xi Chapter
- Alumni Leadership: Andrea Salazar Bryant, Environmental Assessment

Award recipients will be honored at the awards ceremony along with campus departments receiving recognition as a Green Office for adopting sustainable practices in the workplace. The ceremony is open to the public.
