Colloquium panelists will discuss 'Caribbean Representations'


LAWRENCE — The Center for Latin American & Caribbean Studies at the University of Kansas will host the annual Waggoner Research Colloquium, set for 3:30-5 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 15, in the Malott Room of the Kansas Union.

The format includes an interdisciplinary panel on a particular theme, followed by a reception with wine and hors d’oeuvres provided by Taste of Haiti. The 2017 colloquium’s theme is “Caribbean Representations.”

This year’s colloquium features the following presentations:

  • Céclie Accilien, associate professor of African & African American studies, “Haiti at the Spencer Museum of Art: A Journey Through the Mary Lou Vansant Hughes collection”
  • Giselle Anatol, professor of  English, “Folklore and Environmentalism in Caribbean Children's Literature”
  • Tamara Falicov, professor of film & media studies, “The Imperfect Citizen: Contemporary Cuban Cinema”
  • Omaris Zamora, assistant professor of Spanish & Portuguese, “Digital Afro-Dominican Diásporas of Womanhood”

Each fall, faculty and graduate students affiliated with the center have gathered to celebrate KU scholarship on Latin America and the Caribbean for the Colloquium, named in honor of George Waggoner. Waggoner was dean of the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences from 1954 until 1975, when he became the associate vice chancellor for academic affairs. During his tenure, Waggoner founded the College Honors Program and established educational ties with universities in the Caribbean and in Central and South America.
