LAWRENCE – A new minor in visual art will expand opportunity for students at the University of Kansas to advance their artistic ability through hands-on creation, exhibition and research.

The visual art minor will explore studio arts and complement a variety of degrees with its focus on making and creativity.

“While many visual art classes are already open to non-majors, the addition of the visual art minor provides an opportunity for students from across the university to pursue their creative interests in a more in-depth way,” said Henry Bial, director of the School of the Arts.

Students in the minor will be required to take 18 hours of coursework in any visual art concentration, which includes ceramics, drawing, painting, expanded media, textiles/fibers, metalsmithing/jewelry, printmaking and sculpture.

“The new minor is a great opportunity for students of all disciplines to engage in the experience of working with their hands to make art,” said Mary Anne Jordan, professor and chair of visual art. “We look forward to having students of all majors in the studios.”

The minor was developed in response to student interest. Students majoring in subjects across the university have asked for this option to enhance their current degree or fulfill a personal interest in visual art.

The Department of Visual Art, which is part of the School of the Arts in the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences, will offer the new minor starting in spring 2016. Interested students may contact the department at 785-864-4042 or visualart@ku.edu.

The Department of Visual Art is one of four departments in the School of the Arts. As part of the KU College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the School of the Arts offers fresh possibilities for collaboration between the arts and the humanities, sciences, social sciences, international and interdisciplinary studies. The Department of Visual Art provides students with the technical skill and cultural awareness essential to the careers of professional artists, scholars, teachers or administrators.
