Student work sweeps advertising contest, including project on Kansas City Star



LAWRENCE — University of Kansas design students studying visual communication took home the only Gold awards given to university students at the American Advertising Federation of Kansas City American Advertising Awards. The prizes included three Golds, two Silvers and the Best Student award. The event was Feb. 21. 

Josie Miller, Lenexa, won a Gold Award for her study and rebranding of the Kansas City Star. She was also named Best Student in the competition. Her portfolio can be viewed here.

Aliaa El Kalyoubi, Cairo, won a Gold Award for her her West + East campaign. West + East was developed by El Kalyoubi as a class project to promote positive relationships and mutual interests between American and Middle Eastern students and to help eliminate stereotypes and create a healthy environment for social and educational growth. Kristen Myers, Lawrence, won a Silver Award for her branding of “akin”, a handmade children’s clothing brand and sewing workshop space. Her project can be seen here.

Miller, El Kalyoubi and Myers’ projects were completed for Professor of Design Jeremy Shellhorn’s Senior Capstone Project class.

Claire Pedersen, Omaha, Nebraska; Sydney Goldstein, Overland Park, and Lexi Griffith, Lawrence, won a Gold Award for KU Design Week 2014, in which they created, planned and promoted a series of events. The Gold was awarded for the team’s promotional posters and social media campaign, which can be seen here. So far the event and its promotional materials have won three other awards, and been featured in two magazines.

Jamal Gamby earned a Silver award for his redesign of the publication “Winning Pocket Billiards,” produced in a course taught by Professor Patrick Dooley. Gamby’s re-envisioning of the work can be seen here.

The projects that received Gold awards in Kansas City will be entered into the AAF’s Regional Awards. Its gold award winners are automatically entered into the organization's national competition.
