Lawrence students, teachers collaborate in exhibition with visual art department

LAWRENCE — Talented high school artists and the teachers who inspire will receive recognition by the University of Kansas Department of Visual Art in a new collaborative art exhibition opening on campus.

“Emergence: Lawrence Area High School Teacher and Student Exhibition” runs Feb. 15-27 in the Art & Design Gallery with an opening reception from 2-4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 15. The reception and exhibition are free and open to the public.

“‘Emergence’ is a new exhibition established with the goal of creating greater connections between the Department of Visual Art and the developing artists who will continue to shape the Lawrence arts community,” said Whitney Mahoney, lecturer in visual art. “It will be a great opportunity for the Lawrence and KU communities to view the work of these promising artists and the educators who guide them.”

Exhibiting student have been selected by their instructors and chosen to represent their schools because of their enthusiasm and talents for creating. “Emergence” includes work from 25 students and five faculty members from both Lawrence and Free State high schools. The work is a mix of drawing, painting, photography, ceramics and jewelry.

The Department of Visual Art is one of four departments in the School of the Arts. As part of the KU College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the School of the Arts offers fresh possibilities for collaboration between the arts and the humanities, sciences, social sciences, international and interdisciplinary studies.
