KU hosting Lights on Afterschool event at Capitol

LAWRENCE — More than 100 youths from across the state will take part in the national celebration Lights On Afterschool at the Kansas Capitol.

Hosted by the Kansas Enrichment Network, based at the University of Kansas, the event will feature activities with themes such as science, literacy and wellness that typically take place in a quality afterschool program. Students also will have the opportunity to tour the statehouse and complete a scavenger hunt. The event will conclude with two games of kickball.

Lights on Afterschool will take place from 1 to 3 p.m. Friday, Oct. 20, at the Capitol lawn, SW Eighth and SW Van Buren streets, Topeka.

The event is made possible through a partnership with the Kansas Enrichment Network, Kansas Reading Roadmap, KC STEM Alliance, Kansas Children’s Discovery Center, Topeka Police Department, Shawnee County Sheriff's Office, Safe Kids Kansas, Alliance for a Healthier Generation and Starbase-Topeka. It includes students from Salina, Manhattan and Topeka.

Launched in October 2000, Lights on Afterschool is the only nationwide event celebrating afterschool programs and their important role in the lives of children, families and communities. Kansas Enrichment Network has hosted a Lights on Afterschool event for 10 years.

The Kansas Enrichment Network is housed within the Center for Public Partnerships & Research, part of KU's Achievement & Assessment Institute.
