Prize-winning literature scholar to deliver 'Returning to the Slave’s Song'

LAWRENCE — Christopher Freeburg, author of the prize-winning book "Melville and the Idea of Blackness: Race and Imperialism in Nineteenth Century America" (2012), will present "Returning to the Slave's Song" at the University of Kansas next month.

The annual American-British Lecture, sponsored by the Department of English, will take place at 7 p.m. April 11 in Alderson Auditorium at the Kansas Union. 

Freeburg is the Conrad Humanities Scholar and associate professor of English at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. His most recent work is "Black Aesthetics and the Interior Life" (2017). 

Freeburg’s lecture will come from the book he is currently writing, “Slavery: Art and Counterlife,” which focuses on slave texts across a variety of media and how scholars make sense of them. 

The event is free and open to the public.
