Public lecture to explore role of 'renegades' in understanding cancer

LAWRENCE – Cancer is a powerful word and one that’s often hard to understand. Many of us have seen its life-altering effects on family, friends or maybe even ourselves. But what makes a “well-behaving” normal cell convert into a “renegade” cancer cell?

The public is invited to “One Renegade Cell: Understanding Cancer,” a lecture on common cellular alterations found in most cancers and current research by presenter Kristi Neufeld, University of Kansas associate professor and research coordinator in the Department of Molecular Biosciences. The lecture will take place at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 23, at Topeka & Shawnee County Public Library, 1515 SW 10th Ave. in Topeka. The event is sponsored by the KU College of Liberal Arts & Sciences.

Neufeld’s presentation will discuss what scientists know about the changes in cells and her research aimed at understanding the function of a particular tumor suppressor protein.

Questions about the event may be directed to event coordinator Maureen Cole, maucole@ku.edu or 785-864-8124.

The Department of Molecular Biosciences is one of the more than 50 departments, programs and centers in the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences. The College encourages learning without boundaries through interdisciplinary education, global awareness and experiential learning. The College is KU's broadest, most diverse academic unit.
