School of Education announces date of 2016 Strategies for Educational Improvement Conference

LAWRENCE — The University of Kansas School of Education will host the ninth annual summer Strategies Conference for the region’s PK-12 educators.

This year’s full-day event, Strategies for Educational Improvement: Teaching & Learning for College & Career Readiness, will begin at 8 a.m. June 3 in the Kansas Union. The event is free for Kansas educators and open to the public, but online registration is required by May 20.

This year’s keynote speakers include Dyane Smokorowski, instructional technology coach at Andover Public Schools; and Cindy Couchman, math teacher at Buhler High School. Smokorowski’s presentation is titled “Making Magic Happen for Students,” and it will focus on the essentials of curriculum design. Couchman’s presentation will share and discuss findings from the book “Make it Stick: The Science of Successful Learning” by author Peter Brown. Commissioner Randy Watson and Deputy Commissioner Brad Neuenswander from the Kansas Department of Education are also scheduled to speak.

“Our summer Strategies Conference is always an invigorating event at KU,” said Rick Ginsberg, dean of the School of Education. “We look forward to this event for a variety of reasons, including the free professional development support that we are all able to provide to our region’s teachers and educators in times of continued tightening budgets.”

More than 300 people attended last year’s conference, which focused on Teaching & Learning in a Technological World, with two keynote presenters: Shannon Ralph, 2015 Kansas Teacher of the Year; and Wesley Fryer, a teacher and digital storyteller.

Co-sponsors of the 2016 conference include the Kansas State Department of Education (KSDE) and the Kansas Alliance for the Arts in Education (KSAAE). Other individuals or organizations interested in serving as a sponsor and/or hosting an exhibitor booth are encouraged to contact soe@ku.edu for additional information.

More information on the conference agenda and access to registration is available online.

The KU School of Education is a nationally ranked school, preparing educators as leaders.
