School of Education offering free professional development in KC

OVERLAND PARK — The School of Education at the University of Kansas has announced dates for the 2016-2017 Strategies Event Series, which will include three interactive lectures at the Edwards Campus.

The first session, “Effects of Comprehension Strategy Instruction on English Language Learners' Word Problem Solving Skills,” will feature Michael Orosco, associate professor in the Department of Special Education. The presentation will discuss strategies directed toward reading comprehension within word problems and how they improved solution accuracy in English Language Learners at risk for math learning difficulties.

Orosco’s session will take place at 9 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 5, in Room 120 of the B.E.S.T. Building at the KU Edwards Campus. The session is free and open to the public, though an RSVP is required.

The second session of the series will take place at 9 a.m. Feb. 27, 2017. Karen Jorgensen from the Department of Curriculum and Teaching will present “English Learners: The Myths and Realities” as an interactional session for classroom teachers.

The final session of the series will be April 22, 2017, with a faculty member and presentation title to be announced in the near future.

“Our Strategies Conference is an invigorating event hosted at KU each summer,” said Rick Ginsberg, dean of the School of Education. “Many of our participants make the trip to Lawrence for our summer conference, so we wanted the Strategies Event Series to complement the support we provide to reach our educators and service providers throughout the Kansas City metropolitan area as well.”

More information about the Strategies Event Series can be found here.

The School of Education partners with the Edwards Campus for the Strategies Event Series in order to bring high-quality academic programs, research and public-service benefits of KU to the Greater Kansas City community.
