School of Languages annouces 2020-2021 Brownson Scholarship awardee


LAWRENCE — The University of Kansas School of Languages, Literatures & Cultures and the Department of East Asian Languages & Cultures have announced the 2020-2021 Brownson Scholarship awardee. 

The Helen Brownson Scholarship for the Academic Year 2020-2021 was awarded to Tong Moua of Kansas City, Kansas. Moua is a freshman majoring in global & international studies and East Asian languages, literatures & cultures. Moua stood out among a highly competitive pool of 17 applicants. 

“Having worked hard to overcome various hardships and financial constraints, she has not only excelled in schoolwork but also served in a variety of leadership positions in student organizations and local communities,” says Hui Xiao, associate professor and chair of East Asian languages & cultures. “Receiving the Helen Brownson Scholarship will ease Ms. Moua’s financial burden so that she can further her education and achieve her goals of promoting multicultural diversity and working for the United Nations in the future to help those disadvantaged groups around the world.” 

Brownson earned her bachelor's degree from KU in 1938. Her work on scientific research for various boards and committees ultimately led to the creation of the field of information science. Brownson died Aug. 5, 2017, in Washington, D.C. Her wish was to support students demonstrating a commitment to learning foreign languages and cultures at KU. At KU some 40 languages are taught on a regular basis, as well as courses on culture, literature, history and politics connected with many of those languages. KU is a national leader in the study of foreign languages, offering more languages than any other university in the Big 12 Conference.
